Dust Mites

Dust mites are the creatures that are related to the spider. These bugs are very tiny and the small size along with the translucent body makes them barely visible. The typical house mites measure between 0.25mm to 0.3mm only. The males do not live more than 19 or 20 days, but the females often last up to 70 days and lay nearly 100 eggs during this period.

These creatures have the extraordinary ability to survive in all types of climate. They thrive in the indoor environments like bedrooms and kitchens. Mattresses, beddings, carpets and furniture are their best thriving places. Dust mites feed on the minute particles of organic detritus like flakes of the skin shed from the human body.

Dust mites are the ones to cause the triggering of asthma in human beings. They actually produce an allergen that triggers the asthma.

You may think that a clean house can never be the abode for dust mites. This is wrong! The cleanest house can also have the dust mites and it is impossible to get rid of them totally. The following methods may be of great help in preventing them in the house:

  • Maintaining the relative humidity of the room at about 50% will prevent the growth of the dust mites.
  • All the beddings as well as blankets must be washed every week with hot water. Non washable things should be frozen overnight to kill the dust mites.
  • Replacing the wool or feathered beddings with synthetic materials which are washable can be used so that they can be washed regularly to prevent the growth of the dust mites.
  • Removal of the wall to wall carpets in bedrooms and keeping the floors bare also help in preventing the growth of the mites.
  • Vacuum cleaners with HEPA filter help to trap the allergens produced by the dust mites and thus protect us from getting sick.
  • In order to stay protected against the allergens, always wear a mask while vacuuming.

These are the things that you can do yourself. In case the allergy goes out of control, you must seek professional help without delay.
