How to Remove Mold on Your Baby's Bath Toys

7012 101413 gs7012Bath toys are usually kept in the bathroom, which is subject to high humidity and lots of dampness. It is for those reasons that bath toys can become an ideal breeding place for mold. Not only is mold unsightly in appearance, but it can also be dangerous to your baby’s health. Mold can lead to symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing and watery eyes, and can even lead to worse health complications. And since bath toys might eventually end up in your baby's mouth, it is extremely important to wash them thoroughly at first sign of any mold growth, and try to prevent it as much as possible. Below are some tips and getting rid of and preventing mold growth:

Mold Removal

  • Fill a clean bucket with warm clean water. Add one cup of white-vinegar. Avoid using any harsh chemicals which can affect your baby’s delicate skin.
  • Put the baby's bath toys in solution and leave them to soak over-night. For the squeeze toys, fill them with vinegar solution before leaving them to soak overnight.
  • Discard the solution the following day. Dry your baby’s toys thoroughly using a clean rag before you return them to your bathtub. You can also leave them to dry outside on sunny day; this will ensure they are fully dry. If they are squeezing toys, squeeze them to release all water from the inside.
  • If the vinegar solution did not remove the mold, you can try a bleach solution. Mix one gallon of warm clean water and 3/4 cup of chlorine-bleach, and then soak the toys for about 5 minutes to remove any mold. Fill the squeeze toys with bleach solution and then soak for about 5 minutes. Discard the water, rinse thoroughly with lots of clean water and then dry the toys.

However, if you are certain the mold stains won’t go away, it’s better to dispose the toys to avoid any health problems to your baby.

Mold Prevention

  • Clean the toys once a week using the vinegar solution mentioned above.
  • Always squeeze out water from squeeze toys and place all toys somewhere where they can dry each night

The tips above should effectively help you remove and prevent mold on your baby’s bath toys. And if you would like assistance with your housekeeping needs, do not hesitate to contact the professionals at The Maids of Durham-Chapel Hill.
